  • Leadtimes are mixed

    Staff -- Purchasing, 9/16/2004 2:00:00 AM

Leadtimes for many passive and interconnect components are stretching, but delivery times for semiconductors are falling, according to PURCHASING magazine's monthly business survey of electronics buyers.

Overall, leadtimes for 24 of 41 components surveyed dropped in August, including DRAM, SRAM, flash, logic and microprocessors. Sixteen leadtimes stretched. Deliver times for capacitors, resistor networks and d-subminiature connectors all moved out.

The discrepancy in leadtime trends between semiconductors and passives and connectors is likely due to inventory levels. Chip companies' inventory levels had built up in the second quarter because of sluggish demand for end equipment. Passive component and connector makers did not have as high inventory levels as chip companies.

Unfortunately for buyers, leadtimes for semiconductors and passives will likely stretch for the rest of the year. Component demand is greatest in the third and fourth quarters and higher inventory levels will soon be whittled.
