  • Leadtimes will stretch again

    Staff -- Purchasing, 6/17/2004 2:00:00 AM

The seasonal slowdown in the electronics industry that usually occurs in the first quarter apparently kicked in at the beginning of the second quarter instead. Leadtimes shrunk as demand, which has been booming since September of last year, eased a bit in April.

Buyers can expect another month or two of short leadtimes before the electronic supply chain reloads. Most OEMs and electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers start building for the Christmas selling season in the third quarter. Component demand will rise again and leadtimes will stretch for most components, especially for parts used in consumer electronics equipment and wireless products.

However, supply for some components will improve later in the year. Case in point: NAND flash memory. Manufacturers are increasing capacity as they fight to maintain or increase market share. In addition, new suppliers are jumping into the NAND flash market.

NAND flash supply will increase while leadtimes—and prices—will fall, despite strong demand.
