David Hannon, News and Transportation Editor -- Purchasing, 2/19/2004 2:00:00 AM

The National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) continues to push the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission on rate competition in the ocean shipping industry. NITL in January presented petitions filed by nonvessel operating common carriers seeking to eliminate rate transparency and obtain greater pricing flexibility for the ocean shipping industry.

The submission gave FMC a set of common principles that are "designed to assist the agency in recognizing that it has the ability to take into account the changes that have evolved in today's transportation industry," according to NITL spokesman Peter Gatti. "Both users and service providers should be afforded the opportunity to engage and do business as is recognized in most all other industries today."

Last fall, the NITL told FMC it has authority under the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998 to grant a "class exemption" to offer service contracts.
