Worldwide sales of semiconductors in May increased 2.4% to $20.3 billion compared to May 2006, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association. May chip sales were also up 1.2% from April 2007.
“Worldwide sales of semiconductors rebounded slightly in May, after a sequential decline in April,” says SIA President George Scalise. “Sales of microprocessors and NAND flash memory saw the largest sales increases, indicating continued strength in end markets for personal computers and cell phones.”
Overall chip revenue growth occurred in May despite a 14% decline in DRAM prices from April. Total DRAM revenue fell 8% although unit shipments increased 7%.
Despite severe price pressure on DRAMs and NAND flash, total sales of semiconductors for the first five months of 2007 increased by 3.1% from the same period of 2006, says Scalise.
