  • NAND memory prices rise

By James Carbone -- Purchasing, 2/12/2009 2:00:00 AM

Contract prices for NAND flash memory increased in January following production cutbacks by suppliers, according to researcher DRAMeXchange in Taiwan.

The average contract price of 4Gb multi level cell (MLC) and 8Gb MLC products increased as much as 23–27%. The increase resulted from a 20% reduction of 200mm wafer production from the fourth quarter of 2008 to the first quarter of 2009. In addition, the Toshiba/SanDisk group said it would cut 300mm wafer production by 30%.

In the fourth quarter, most NAND suppliers either announced production cutbacks or said they would hold current production levels, which resulted in price reductions for many devices. In the short-term, the prices will be stable. After January, prices will rise or fall based on how strong demand is.
