Another PC battery recall

Chinese personal computer maker Lenovo has recalled about 205,000 lithium-ion laptop computer batteries made by Japan's Sanyo Electric, warning that they could overheat and cause a fire. This battery recall is the second for the company in the past six months and includes about 100,000 batteries in the U.S.
Lenovo bought IBM's personal computer division in 2005 and has its world headquarters in North Carolina's Research Triangle Park. The company says the batteries can overheat if the laptop is dropped a certain way, striking the battery on a corner edge. The advisory was made along with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Sanyo officials have defended the batteries, saying the problems resulted from a strong external impact to the battery and were not triggered by the batteries themselves. Sanyo is supporting Lenovo's recall and has already taken steps toward "working together with Lenovo and putting the first priority on consumer safety."
Most of the 14 million lithium-ion laptop batteries recalled worldwide last year were made by Sony, with nearly every major laptop computer maker asking customers to return their batteries subject to replacement.
