A majority (69%) of the buyers surveyed in October experienced notable price increases of some kind. Energy costs appear to have risen across all buying groups. Also rising in price again in October were scrap steel and such steel mill products as carbon strip, sheet, plate, galvanized sheet, electro-galvanized sheet, large round steel bars, SBQ bars, cold-finished steel bars, steel cables, steel tubing, light structurals, as well as steel wire and steel strapping, plus electrical steels, stainless steels and silicon steels. Increases also were reported by buyers of forged steel, steel castings, forged aluminum, aluminum castings, aluminum sheet, copper, brass nickel based alloys, zinc and lead.
Among the chemicals, buyers paid more for styrenics, ethylene glycol, methyl ethyl ketone, the various caustic and surfactant chemicals, carbon black, chlorine, toluene, bulk solvents, latex, and ammonia. Higher tags also were reported for plastic resins such as ABS, polypropylene, polyethylene and polycarbonate products, plus plastic bottles/containers and plastic parts. Packaging materials rose in price, as did such products as pulp, paper, paperboard, corrugated and chipboard.
Trucking and various transportation services increased in price, as did such building materials as cement, glass, paints, lumber and plywood.
Electronic components such as synchronous random access memory chips, semiconductors, integrated circuits, electronic connectors and multi-layer printed circuit boards inflated in price; so did couplings, fittings, fasteners, machined and fabricated metals and platinum thermoformed trays.
