Plexus to close EMS facility
Electronics manufacturing services provider Plexus says it will close its 65,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Ayer, Mass. by March 2009.
"We anticipate that this closure will generate savings in the range of $4–5 million annually," says Ginger Jones, CFO of Plexus. The closing will result in 170 people at the facility losing their jobs.
The company plans to transition products manufactured in the facility to other Plexus facilities, primarily in Neenah, Wis., where the company is based. Plexus builds printed circuit boards and electronic sub-assemblies for the defense/security/aerospace and telecommunications industries at the Ayer facility.
Intel to ship Core i7 processor in fourth quarter
Intel says its next generation of microprocessors will be called Core i7 and the chip will go into production in the last quarter of the year.
"The Core name is and will be our flagship PC processor brand going forward," says Sean Maloney, Intel's executive vice president and general manager of sales and marketing. He says the Intel Core processor brand name has gained broad awareness, preference, and market momentum over the past several years.
The Intel Core i7 processor brand logo will be available for high-performance desktop PCs in the fourth quarter. The processors will feature Intel's hyper-threading technology, also known as simultaneous multi-threading, and are capable of handling eight software "threads" on four processor cores.
