General Motors announced that by the end of 1999 its Delphi Automotive Systems will be a fully independent company. Delphi is the world's largest supplier of automotive components, systems, and modules. Delphi's annual revenues in 1997 were $31.4 billion.
The move, though long anticipated, is not expected to help relations with the UAW. Union officials are on record as opposing the move, and say they "will aggressively work to protect the rights and interests of UAW members impacted by the sale," according to published reports. Delphi comprises about 200,000 GM employees worldwide; about 25% are represented by the UAW.
