RFID News: The RFID world is focusing on the physics involved in setting up networks and less on data integration

A recent report says too much of the talk in the RFID world today is focusing on the physics involved in setting up networks and not enough attention is being paid to data integration issues. The report, "Beyond the physics of RFID" from Research and Markets says "RFID technology has tremendous potential to change the way business is being done and the way supply chains are managed. However, to do this correctly, businesses need to look at the RFID deployment holistically, keeping in mind issues surrounding cost, standards, and privacy. More importantly, data integration has to come to the forefront of RFID."
The report emphasizes the "garbage in/garbage out" theory, saying data quality and integration problems need to be addressed from the outset, otherwise RFID initiatives are likely to result in a costly failure. Research and Markets estimates the global RFID market to reach $1 billion by 2006.
International Paper is performing some advanced testing of RFID technology at its Customer Solution Center (CSC), a non-temperature controlled warehouse, complete with concrete floors and walls, metal racking and a host of industrial equipment that provides a real-world warehouse environment. Opened for business in June 2004 in Memphis, Tenn., the center, lets International Paper test and create RFID solutions with the latest reader and tag technology, including portal and dock door RFID readers, high-speed conveyor readers and the company's unique fork-lift-based solution.
"We conduct testing for our customers to ensure they purchase the RFID solution that works best with their product's packaging and meets their business needs," says Gary Lofrese, manager of International Paper's Customer Solution Center. "With rapid adoption of the technology and standards within the industry, it is exciting to participate in this developing field as we witness improvements in tag design and reader performance on a daily basis."
