Toy Industry Association stresses safety-testing efforts
ANSI and toy industry collaborate on testing and inspection standards and procedures

Toy importers must insist that their off-shore manufacturers hold their second-tier suppliers to the same standards that the manufacturers themselves must meet.
That’s one element of the advice the Toy Industry Association is giving to its members in the wake of recent recalls of toys made in China. The Association is also working with other organizations such as the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Chinese authorities to establish measures that ensure all toys are safe.
The Association has formed a working group to help develop and implement new testing programs. Initial members of the group are retailers and laboratories, but Association representatives told Purchasing that the group will include Chinese manufacturers as well. “It is worth noting that we have been conducting, with CPSC, toy-safety seminars for manufacturers for more than a decade,” Association spokesperson Julie Livingston said.
She added that the Association is working with ANSI and others on laboratory-certification protocols.
Says Carter Keithley, president of the Association, “we are out to make sure that the toys are among the safest things parents bring into their homes this holiday season.”
