Consumers continue to feel better about the economy. The most recent Reuters/University of Michigan survey shows its index of consumer confidence rose to 69.0 for June, up from 68.7 for May. The June figure was a nine-month high, Reuters said.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Labor Department reported that initial jobless claims for the week ending June 6 were down 24,000 from the previous week.
The four-week moving average was also down.
Still, continuing claims for unemployment went up for the week ended May 30. The government says unemployment is now at 9.4%.
