Computer shipments to rise 10% in 2010 as the economy recovers

Worldwide personal computer shipments will drop 6% to 274
million in 2009, according to researcher Gartner. The PC market will post
positive growth in the fourth quarter of the year and then grow 10.3% in 2010,
says the researcher. However, Gartner analysts say while the market appears to
be improving, it is premature to say that the worst is over and the market is
recovering.
"PC unit growth was stronger than we expected in all markets but Eastern Europe in the first quarter of 2009. In
particular, consumer shipments were much stronger than we anticipated,"
says George Shiffler, research director at Gartner. However, he adds the growth
in consumer units was due to restocking of inventories in sales channels rather
than an upsurge in demand.
Shiffler says unit shipment will contract about 10%
year-over-year in both second and third quarter 2009, but then post positive
growth in the fourth quarter.
Mini-notebooks continued to cushion the market's decline in the first quarter
of 2009. Unit shipments are on track to reach 21 million this year and 30
million next year. Mobile-PC units are forecast to total 149 million units in
2009, a 4.1% increase over 2008. However, revenue from shipments will decline
12.8% as mobile-PC prices fall because of a shift to lower priced computers.
Desk-based PC units are expected to total 125 million, a 15.7% decline compared with 2008 and revenue from shipments will fall 26.6%.
