Novelis will be the sole supplier of aluminum sheet for the all-new Jaguar XJ sedan. Jaguar will use the Novelis Fusion multi-layered aluminum sheet products for various body panels.
Jaguar says in a statement that the aluminum body will helps make the modified XJ sedan some 330 lbs lighter than its main rivals so there will be improved performance, handling and fuel economy, while delivering increased strength, refinement and safety.
The carmaker says the lower weight also enables the new XJ to minimize its carbon footprint by reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Novelis' automotive specialists worked alongside Jaguar engineers and designers to provide expertise in materials technology from initial design of the model, through prototype development, right up to vehicle manufacturing.
"Novelis is delighted to be, once again, Jaguar's chosen supplier of aluminum sheet," says Tadeu Nardocci, president of Novelis Europe, in a statement. "This continues the close cooperation between the companies, which started with the development of the previous XJ saloon, and, since then, has extended to the XK roadster and the XF sedan."
For Jaguar, light weighting and minimization of the amount of materials used are fundamental elements of the company's approach to sustainability, which focuses on the whole life cycle of the vehicle, including recycling. Novelis takes back aluminum scrap from Jaguar's stamping plants and recycles it into new automotive sheet in a closed-loop system through its European network of plants. Recycling aluminum uses only 5% of the energy required to produce primary metal and avoids 95% of the greenhouse gas emissions.
