Truckload demand picks up in September

Analysts, carriers report higher loads and rates last month

There are some clear indications that demand for truckload services is increasing heading into the fourth quarter and freight buyers should take note.

"The month of September ended stronger than it began as truckload demand increased in the weeks before shippers were to close their books on the third quarter," says the monthly report from Longbow Research. The report also said fewer market participants noted "more aggressive pricing" in truckload than in recent months. "Our channel checks indicate we are not heading toward tighter pricing, but it appears that it is getting less loose" although excess capacity remains plentiful in truckload today.

A major truckload carrier tells Purchasing.com this week there are select regions where it has been able to raise rates, albeit from historically low levels. "We have also seen more strength in the upper Midwest and if the economy continues to improve the materials made in the Upper Midwest that will be an area where demand increases," the carrier said.
