Silicon wafer shipments to the global semiconductor industry will decline 20% this year, but then increase 23% in 2010, according to trade association SEMI. Wafer shipments in 2009 will total 6.3 billion square inches.
After growing 23% in 2010, wafer shipments will increase another 10% in 2011 when shipments will reach 8.5 billion square inches, an all-time high. Rising silicon wafer demand is a sign that the semiconductor industry will recover in 2010. Semiconductor industry revenue is expected to decline by about 16% in 2009, but then grow 14% in 2010, according to researcher iSuppli.
Silicon wafers are the fundamental building material for semiconductors. The thin, round disks are produced in diameters ranging from 1-12 inches and are the substrate material on which more than 95% of semiconductors are fabricated.
