Revenue for semiconductor equipment rose 7.7% to $624.6 million in September and was the fifth consecutive month that shipments increased, according to trade association SEMI.
Semiconductor equipment manufacturers also received $732.8 million in new orders, up 19.3% from August and 12.8% from September 2009.
Dan Tracy, senior director of industry research and statistics at SEMI, says that the increase in new orders in September 2009 from year-ago levels was the first time since May 2007 that year-over-year bookings rose. The increase indicates that capital spending by semiconductor companies is rising.
As a result of increased bookings, the book-to-bill ratio for semiconductor equipment increased from 1.00 in August to 1.17 in September. That means for every $100 of equipment that shipped in September, manufacturers received $117 in new orders.
