By December, several paper mills hope to see market prices go up by $50/metric ton for 30-lb newsprint, a benchmark grade, which is less than their earlier expectations of a $70/metric ton, buyers report.
The RISI forest products information service also reports that AbitibiBowater, White Birch, Kruger and Tembec are seeking to boost newsprint in two $25/metric ton installments on Nov. 1 and Dec. 1. Catalyst Paper is telling U.S. customers that it will increase the price by $50/metric ton on Dec. 1.
For the past two months, buyer surveys show prices around $470/metric ton, whish is under $480 list. Back in September, all of North America's largest newsprint producers told their customers to expect U.S. price increases of $70 in coming months. East Coast newsprint producers actually tried, and failed, to get one of two $35/metric ton back-to-back monthly increases started in September-which would have brought this month's list price to $495 if the increases had succeeded.
