The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an antitrust
investigation into the optical disk-drive business units of Sony Corp., Hitachi and Toshiba,
according to the companies. Optical drives include CD and DVD drives.
Sony says it was served a subpoena by Justice and Hitachi and Toshiba say
they were notified that they were being investigated.
Justice has conducted similar probes focusing on
price-fixing schemes by DRAM and liquid crystal display (LCD) suppliers. In
those investigations, many company executives pleaded guilty to fixing prices
and were fined and went to jail. Their companies were also fined millions of
dollars. A spokesperson had no comment.
