Six wood pulp companies are planning to raise prices by $30/metric ton this month for northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK), which would boost the list price to $830.
According to reports by the RISI forest products information service, the $30 increase-the second such move in two months-has been announced by Tembec, West Fraser, AbitibiBowater, Alberta-Pacific, SFK Pulp and Parsons & Whittemore.
The pulp mills reportedly are telling paper mill customers that they're raising prices because of tight inventories and solid demand; buyers haven't been paying list lately though because they say demand isn't as strong as the pulp makers contend. For example, Purchasingdata.com says the transaction price for NBSK was $765 last month while the mill list was $800.
Sappi Fine Paper North America is the first northern bleached hardwood kraft (NBHK) producer out with a U.S. market increase, setting a $25/metric ton hike that would bring list to $710 from $685. Last month's transaction price was $640.
