Stimulus funds cover half of $19 million Green project

Nearly $10 million in stimulus money is slated to help fund
energy efficiency projects at a trio of paper mills in Maine
and Minnesota, according to a joint statement from
U.S.
Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.
Pulp and paper maker Verso Paper of Memphis, Tenn. has been
awarded a $9.4 million stimulus grant for waste energy recovery projects at its
mills in Jay and Bucksport, Maine,
and Sartell, Minn., according to the senators. "Reducing
consumption of energy at these facilities will keep these mills competitive
with international competition (and) reduce carbon emissions," their statement
adds.
Verso will match the Department of Energy grant with $9.7 in
company funding. Verso's energy efficiency projects are expected to save 1.28
trillion British thermal units annually, according to a press release. Verso will use the money to implement a total
of 12 waste energy recovery projects at the mills, including three at the Jay
mill and four in Bucksport, according to the Bangor Daily News. The projects will reuse heat and water to power
other mill operations, according to a Verso spokesman.
