Increased demand for NAND flash memory will result in shortages as NAND production in 2010 will not keep up with demand.
Devices that use NAND flash such as MP3 players, mobile phones and other portable equipment will increase in 2010 as demand for those devices rise as the global economy recovers. In addition more devices will use higher densities of flash.
As a result, worldwide NAND flash demand bit growth will be up 81% in 2010 compared to 2009, according to researcher DRAMeXchange in Taiwan. However, supply bit growth will only increase 79% as suppliers will try to keep the market in balance rather than overproducing in an effort to gain market share.
Supply could vary from quarter to quarter. There will be a slight oversupply in the first quarter as seasonal demand weakens following the holidays. Oversupply will last through the first half, but then supply will be short in the second half of 2010, according to DRAMeXchange.
