The Bureau of Transportation Statistics this week said its Freight Transportation Services Index dipped 0.5% in September after three months of increases that had propped up hopes of a freight demand rebound.
The index measures the output of the for-hire freight transportation industry based on data from providers. So far this year, the index has declined 4.6%, indicating demand for freight has been down this year in the U.S. It has declined 10 of the past 14 months. But in June, July and August, the index showed increases before the September dip.
Purchasing's monthly transportation services buying plans index has been below 50 for the past three months and sits at 48.7 in November, indicating buyers are still not planning to increase spending on transportation, but are getting closer. A reading above 50 would indicate buyers plan to increase buying.
