Corrugated box shipments fall

Home-market corrugated box shipments dropped in October to 29.9 billion square feet, according to Fibre Box Association statistics. That's down 3.2% from September and 7.9% from a year-ago October. Year-to-date shipments in 2009 have dropped 9.6%, according to the trade association.
The RISI forest products news organization notes that containerboard inventories at box plants and mills in October declined to 2.163 million tons, the lowest level in more than 14 years. Box plant inventories dropped while mill stocks rose so that total supply at end-October was at 3.9 weeks.
Linerboard production for export jumped again in October, hitting a near-record level of. 321,000 tons. That's up 18.2% from a year ago but still a year-to-date decline in shipments of 13.8%, according to the American Forest & Paper Association. Total containerboard output in October was down 3.5% from a year ago, despite the jump in exports, keeping capacity utilization at 88%.
