Despite the recession, global PC shipments will end the year
growing nearly 3%, but revenue from those shipments will decline 11%, according
to researcher Gartner Inc.
Worldwide PC shipments will total 298.9 million units in 2009, up 2.8% from 2008. In 2010, PC shipments will increase 12.6% to 336.6 million units, says Gartner.
Computer shipments in the third quarter of 2009 were stronger than expected and resulted in positive unit growth for the PC industry for the year, says George Shiffler, research director at Gartner.
While PC shipments will increase, revenue from those shipments will end the year declining. The total value of global PC shipments will be $217 billion in 2009, a 10.7% drop from 2008. Revenue will recover a bit in 2010 as the market value of PC shipments will increase 2.6% to $222.9 billion, says Gartner.
Average price cuts for PCs will slow as the economy and PC market recovers in 2010, but the good news for PC buyers is prices will not increase.
Gartner says Windows 7, Microsoft's new operating system, will have a little impact on holiday PC sales, but noted that 2010 PC shipments could be affected.
