Russell-Stanley has acquired Smurfit Plastic Packaging, manufacturer of plastic industrial containers. The sale includes five U.S. plants producing blow molded plastic drums and containers.basf has acquired the surfactants and paper chemicals businesses of PPG Industries, while PPG has acquired basf's container coatings business.
GFS Chemicals has acquired the sodium biphenyl business of Sachem of Austin, Texas.
BetzDearborn has completed the acquisition of Argo Scientific, a membrane support technology company in San Marcos, Calif.
Dow Chemical has acquired South African-based Sentrachem. Sentrachem's U.S. business: Hampshire Chemical is now owned by Dow, except for the U.S. chelates business and its Lima, Ohio plant. That business goes to Akzo Nobel.
Air Products and Chemicals has bought Industrial Gas and Supply Co., a distributor of welding and industrial supplies to Va., W.Va., Tenn, and N.C.
Dow Chemical and Cargill have formed a joint venture to develop and market plastics made from corn, sugar beets, and other agricultural resources. Each will own half of Cargill Dow Polymers which will produce polylactic acid (PLA) polymers.
PPG Canada has bought Phillips Paint Products a manufacturer of industrial coatings located in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Olin Corp. has taken ownership of the U.S. Army's hydroxylammonium nitrate plant at Olin's Charleston, Tenn., production complex. As part of a contract with the Army, Olin built and operated the plant exploring alternatives to traditional solid propellants. Olin plans on exploring commercial uses for the product.
