Nuts-and-bolts guidelines
By Staff -- Purchasing, 2/12/1998
Delta Airlines has adopted "conformity requirements" from several sources including the British Standards Institution. These recommendations address the nitty-gritty that companies must consider during Year 2000 preparation.* To ensure date integrity, equipment and products should not use "particular date values for special meanings." An example is 99 to show "no end value" or "end of file." Nor should 00 mean "not applicable" or "beginning of file."
* Firms should be aware of "explicit/implicit century" references. The year can be identified explicitly in four digits or by a "century indicator." Exceptions may be required in "domain-specific standards" such as electronic data interchange (EDI).
Implicit year recognition means the year is still listed by two digits, but the digits "with a value equal to or less than 50 implies 20xx." Companies must adjust all systems where this date will appear to prevent confusion between references to the 20th century (19xx) and 21st century (20xx).
