Purchasing Online aims high in 1998

By Mark Vigoroso -- Purchasing, 2/12/1998

Don't be reluctant to learn the potential keys to greater success in your situation. The numbers in the future will be your judge.

The sky's the limit in the coming year for the electronic arm of Purchasing Magazine, Purchasing Online (www.purchasing.com). Buyers looking to stay on top of their markets and to employ the latest supply chain management strategies will use Purchasing Online more and more as a viable business tool.

Mainstays on the site are daily price hotlines; news and exclusive pricing data for key industrial markets such as metals, chemicals, electronics, and energy; supply strategy articles on such timely topics as electronic commerce, integrated supply, and outsourcing; weekly reader survey results; and breaking news from the worldwide news service, Lexis-Nexis.

As a compliment to the print magazine, the web site will continue to take advantage of the latest in Internet technology to provide buyers the information they need, exactly when they need it. According to a recent reader survey, nearly 60% of buyers have little or no success locating valuable information on the Web. We intend to change that with these enhancements to Purchasing Online in 1998:

* Expert-hosted forums: Many buyers took advantage of our year-ending online discussion forum on electronic commerce, hosted by an industry expert. Look for similar forums on topics such as the Millennium Bug, Energy Buying, and JIT II.

* Complete interface redesign: Purchasing Online will be getting a face lift early in the year. The new look will include easier navigation, more departments, and more sophisticated graphics.

* Software demos: You've seen the latest purchasing software packages advertised in Purchasing Magazine's "Software Mart." Soon, you will be able to download free demos of this software directly through your web browser.

* Pricing services: Order Purchasing's Transaction Prices and other pricing services directly online and receive them in days. Once a futuristic ideal, soon to be an everyday reality at the site.

* Conference coverage: LIVE, from the show floor! Look for real-time coverage of 1998's National Manufacturing Week (March 16-19), IDG Internet Commerce Expo (March 23-26), napm International Conference (May 3-6), and more. Stay tuned!

These are just a few of the projects we are committed to working on this year. Your feedback is crucial to our success at building the premier procurement site on the 'Net. If you would like to see additions or changes to the site, please offer suggestions or comments to me at mvigoroso@cahners.com. Be sure to visit www.purchasing.com frequently to take advantage of this evolving business tool.
