Order volumes stay steady as parts availability remains high

By James Carbone -- Purchasing, 3/26/1998

Order volumes in February were mostly steady compared to the previous month, but an ever-increasing percentage of buyers are reporting higher prices for electronic components. Purchasing Magazine's survey of electronics buying conditions finds that 26% of purchasers report that prices for components are rising. While that's a small percentage, it's up from 17% in January and 14% in December. Meanwhile, the percentage of buyers reporting stable or falling prices is declining.

February's survey also finds that 54% say they will increase their order volumes over the next 90 days, down slightly from 57% the previous month. However, there is little indication that a sellers' market is imminent. Fifty-six percent say leadtimes are stable, 50% say they are cutting inventories, and 65% say there are no items in short supply.

Buyers also are optimistic about the electronics industry. Evidence: Forty percent say business in the next quarter will remain the same, 57% expect that business will improve over the next 90 days, and only 3% say it will worsen.
