Use of ink-jet color printers takes off

By Staff -- Purchasing, 3/26/1998

When it comes to technology, North American businesses prefer ink jet over laser, finds a new survey of users by Dataquest. Of those surveyed, more than 83% say ink jet is the primary type of color printer at their location. Color laser printers are being used by 11% of respondents surveyed.

"Color ink-jet printers lead the industry due in part to their affordability and ease of use," says Paula Bursley, senior industry analyst for Dataquest's Printers North America program. "Color laser technology is still complex, and costs are substantially higher than monochrome printers."

Color-printer placements into the business environment are growing, but not at the positive rate that the home marketplace has experienced in the past several years.

Seventy-one percent of respondents surveyed say they plan to purchase additional color printers. Primary color-printing applications listed by those surveyed are business graphics/reports and presentations, which are the same primary applications cited by the previous survey. The one feature/function that respondents overwhelmingly want to change about the color printer they most recently purchased is to increase print speed.
