Index turns the corner

By Staff -- Purchasing, 4/9/1998

After declining for the first two months, Purchasing's index of industrial chemical prices bounced back a bit, climbing one point to101.6 in March. Much of the upward push came from higher chlor-alkali and acetone prices.

Despite the index's rise, only a few chemical prices increased in March. Caustic soda tags rose $46/ton to an average of $253/ton. Chlorine prices also increased, jumping $9/ton to $233/ton. U.S. bulk contracts for soda ash went up $2/ton to $97/ton. Acetone prices increased 5(cent)/lb to an average of $25/ton. Isopropanol tags rose 1(cent)/lb to 26(cent)/lb.

Despite the slight increase in the index, a number of aliphatic and aromatic chemical tags declined in March. Among them, benzene dropped 10(cent)/gal to 85(cent)/gal, and toulene slipped 3(cent)/gal to $1.00/gal.
