It's wise to have a back-up supplier for notebook PCs, say analysts at the Gartner Group, Stamford, Conn. An alternative gives buyers more bargaining power with suppliers and helps ensure availability in case there are shortages, price jumps, or glitches with models provided by a primary supplier. On the flip side, a sole source may be simpler to manage.
