Catto says semiconductor industry will recover

By James Carbone -- Purchasing, 4/23/1998

Texas Instrument's chief economist says the Asian financial crisis will not have a disastrous impact on the semiconductor industry, but it will slow growth.

Vladi Catto says the global semiconductor market would have grown between 15% and 17% this year if not for the Asian crisis. Instead it will grow about 10% to $150 billion.

Catto also forecasts that the chip market will grow up to 35% in 1999 as the Asian economy recovers, demand increases, overcapacity lessens, and prices for memory chips rise.

"If we expect the semiconductor market to grow 10% in 1998, then we should expect the industry to grow between 20% and 35% in 1999, Catto says.
