NEDA survey: Distributors invest in E-Commerce

By James Carbone -- Purchasing, 4/23/1998

Electronics distributors are investing in information technologies like the Internet and electronic data interchange, according to a new survey by the National Electronic Distributors Association.

The average IT budget was $150,000 in 1997, but the survey finds that many distributors are uneasy about using the Internet to conduct business, and few purchase orders are sent via EDI.

The survey says 42.5% of respondents reported they were somewhat uncomfortable about conducting business over the Internet. The main reason cited was security followed by cost and inappropriate usage. However, 45.2% of respondents think the Internet will become an important business tool in the next year. Most say they use the Internet for e-mail and 80.5% of respondents say they have a home page on the Internet.

EDI has not caught on with distributors either. On average only about 12.3% of purchases are transmitted via EDI, the survey finds.
