Battery demand keeps on going and going...

By James Carbone -- Purchasing, 4/23/1998

The U.S. market for rechargeable batteries will grow 7% per year through the year 2002 when the market will reach $8.1 billion, according to a new report by The Freedonia Group.

Notebook and handheld computers and wireless phones will be growing markets for rechargeables. Lithium-based rechargeables are emerging as the successors to nickel cadmium cells, which have dominated portable electronic equipment applications.

Meanwhile demand for dry-cell batteries will increase 5.8% through the year 2002 when the market will reach $4.4 billion. Alkalines will grow 7% and have the lightest growth rate of primary batteries.
