Aerospace's appetite for fasteners continues to grow
By Staff -- Purchasing, 5/7/1998
With sales of commercial aircraft booming, the U.S. aerospace industry will gobble up an even greater number of top-grade industrial fasteners.Researchers at The Freedonia Group Inc. report that aerospace OEMs will increase demand for high-end fasteners at a 9% annual rate well into the next century. Most of these fasteners will come from U.S.-based suppliers, according to the report.
The reason? Aerospace-grade fasteners are high-end products, are used in critical applications, and are often custom engineered. That, says the report, will keep OEM buyers from defecting to lower-priced imports or alternative bonding techniques such as adhesives.
Demand for these high-end fasteners will fuel an overall 3.5% annual growth rate for the industrial fasteners business.
Buyers can expect more diverse fastener options, including self-locking, self-cinching and self-sealing screws, bolts, and nuts, as well as threaded inserts.
