Costs are bubbling up, producers say

By Staff -- Purchasing, 5/7/1998

Suppliers currently trying to push price increases usually emphasize costs, according to Purchasing's poll. Asked to choose from a list of "old standby" excuses for raising prices, 60% of buyers have heard suppliers claim raw-materials cost increases, 52% have been hit with the rising labor-cost argument, 44% have heard tell that operating costs are climbing, and 35% say suppliers have been playing the old "margin restoration" game (i.e., costs have been rising and there hasn't been an increase in years).
