Biggest buying problems:

By Staff -- Purchasing, 5/7/1998

Transportation issues are at the forefront this month. "Rail shipments out of the Southwest are a real problem," says a New Jersey buyer. But problems are not limited to rail. "We can't seem to get straight billing from trucking firms, or even receive product in an acceptable condition," says a buyer.

Dealing with suppliers is also causing problems. "It is very difficult to meet JIT requirements internally, and even more difficult to convince our vendors to," says a buyer in Pa. "Vendor attitude toward service and reliability is becoming too relaxed," says a New Jersey buyer. "There's no sense of urgency."
