Korean chip companies delay DRAM plants
By James Carbone -- Purchasing, 5/21/1998
Two leading South Korean semiconductor manufacturers are delaying construction of memory-chip plants because they are restructuring amid the continuing Asian financial troubles.Hyundai Electronics says it will delay completion of its dram facility in Scotland because it is reevaluating its investment plans. The $1.4-billion plant will have the capacity to produce 30,000 64-megabit drams per month. It was supposed to be completed by the end of the year, but it has been delayed by at least another year.
LG Semicon also is delaying building a $1.9-billion plant in Wales which also would build drams. The plant was set to open by the end of the year, but completion has been postponed by about six months. The plant will make 256-megabit drams.
