Water treatment supplier recommends system improvement
By Staff -- Purchasing, 11/19/1998
Management was concerned about several water management issues at the St. Louis, Mo., operations of Chrysler Corp. Odors were emanating from air-supply humidification units, water-cooling manifolds in the paint body shop were corroding, the plant was experiencing condensate loss, and heavy metals were appearing in wastewater.Following the recommendations of water treatment and management supplier BetzDearborn, Chrysler implemented a comprehensive program of corrective actions:
* In the humidification units, an automatic recirculation system eliminated manual handling of chemicals and reduced water use. Special, non-volatile biocides and a media replacement program also helped prevent fouling and odors.
* In welder water systems, equipment changes controlled galvanic corrosion.
* Leaking condensate return stations were repaired or replaced.
* Technology that reduces heavy metals minimized lead content in wastewater.
Above and beyond the obvious environmental benefits, solutions recommended by BetzDearborn resulted in direct annual savings of $500,000 and cost avoidance of $1.5 million. Savings came from extended equipment life; minimized waste; and reductions in energy, water, and chemical use.
BetzDearborn's commitment to increasing customers' profitability is exemplified by an awards program that recognizes field representatives for how much money they save customers. In 1997 alone, BetzDearborn says that 48 field representatives in 13 countries helped 49 customers save a total of $63 million by reducing operating costs, increasing productivity, and improving environmental compliance.
