NERC elects independent board members to its board
By Staff -- Purchasing, 2/11/1999
In its bid to transform itself from "a voluntary system of reliability management to one that is mandatory in nature, with the backing and support of governments," the North American Electric Reliability Council (nerc) has elected nine independent members to its board of trustees.nerc president Michehl Gent says, "The election of the nine independent members to the nerc board is a major milestone in the transition from nerc to naero (North American Electric Reliability Organization), but we have more to do before we can claim that transition is complete." Next steps in the transformation, according to Gent, include:
* Reliability legislation in the U.S. and possibly Canada to allow the creation of a self-regulating reliability organization that can set and enforce compliance with reliability standards and collect funds to do so.
* Agreements with affiliated regional reliability organizations to clearly define roles, responsibilities, and authorities for the effective and efficient implementation of the new reliability system.
* Further details regarding the naero governance process, role of naero members, interface with governments, and public participation.
Says Gent, "Once legislation is passed in the U.S. and the necessary rulemakings are approved, nerc will be ready to turn over governance fully to the nine independent board members."
