Intel has unveiled its 500-MHz Pentium III Xeon chip, designed to power workstations and servers. Price: $931 to $3,692. The worldwide market for local area network (LAN) switches grew 45% to $8.4 billion in 1998. The fast Ethernet switches market fueled the growth in the LAN market as shipments of shared and switched Fast Ethernet ports grew over 300% year-over-year. The worldwide router market grew 17.7% in 1998 with revenue reaching more than $5.9 billion, while shared media hubs revenue slipped to $2.3 billion, a 35.7% decline over 1997.
