Intel unveils 500-MHz Pentium III

Intel has unveiled its 500-MHz Pentium III Xeon chip, designed to power workstations and servers. Price: $931 to $3,692. But Intel expects demand for the chip will increase significantly because of the growth of electronic commerce, which requires servers to handle transactions.Arrow to sell Toshiba Power ICs

Arrow Electronics has been named to exclusively distribute Toshiba's high-power semiconductor products in North America. The line includes co-pack, insulated gate bipolar transistor (igbt) modules, integrated devices (ipm/pim), high-voltage modules, igbt press packs and gate turn-off (GTO) thyristors.LAN switches grew 45%

The worldwide market for local area network (LAN) switches grew 45% to $8.4 billion in 1998. The fast Ethernet switches market fueled the growth in the LAN market as shipments of shared and switched Fast Ethernet ports grew over 300% year-over-year. The worldwide router market grew 17.7% in 1998 with revenue reaching more than $5.9 billion, while shared media hubs revenue slipped to $2.3 billion, a 35.7% decline over 1997.
