By Staff -- Purchasing, 4/22/1999
MasterCard International, Microsoft Corp., and Clarus Corp. are working together to provide corporate buyers with an online purchasing process. To the partnership, Microsoft contributes its Commerce Platform, based on the Windows operating system; Clarus offers its Web-based commerce system, including its business-to-business procurement product; MasterCard provides its corporate payment system, purchasing-card control features, and line-item data reporting.
"Microsoft Commerce Platform, combined with Clarus E-Procurement, and the MasterCard Corporate Purchasing Card offers our joint customers opportunity to reduce the cost of corporate purchasing, while making Internet commerce a strategic asset to their organization," says Rich Tong, vice president, applications marketing, Microsoft.
Instead of issuing requests for proposals (RFPs), poring over catalogs, and calling dozens of suppliers to investigate product availability and pricing, corporate buyers will be able to purchase goods and services from their intranet using the Clarus E-Procurement system, built on the Microsoft Commerce Platform. Using the MasterCard Corporate Purchasing Card, requisitioners can find approved goods and services over the Internet, conduct workflow and approval processes, and execute payment. Suppliers can create commerce-focused Web sites that seamlessly integrate transactions and product updates with their corporate customers' systems.
"The agreement with Microsoft and Clarus will provide unparalleled opportunities for our corporate customers to take advantage of e-commerce for purchasing," says Steve Abrams, senior vice president, corporate products at MasterCard. MasterCard has implemented this integrated Web-based system in its own organization, helping to reduce costs of processing POs from $125 to $40.
