Canadian tube makers challenge import duties
By Staff -- Purchasing, 5/6/1999
Canadian steel-tube makers Atlas Tube and Bolton Steel Tube are challenging Canadian duties on hot-rolled European steel, saying their businesses will be hurt because Canadian companies can't supply all their needs. The two tube-producing companies are calling on Ottawa to reverse a preliminary decision to impose anti-dumping duties of up to 43% on hot-rolled steel from Russia, Rumania, Slovakia, and France, saying Hamilton, Ontario-based steelmakers Dofasco and Stelco can't meet their demand.
The Canadian International Trade Tribunal will make a final decision on whether Canadian producers have been hurt by the European imports after Revenue Canada finishes its investigation. The revenue department first imposed anti-dumping duties on steel imports from the four European nations after Stelco complained that low-priced materials from those countries were hurting its business.
