Price index slips again

By Staff -- Purchasing, 5/6/1999

Purchasing's index of industrial chemical prices has fallen to 79.62, a decline of 0.57 over last month. This is a slight decline, reversing only part of the previous month's climb of 0.84. Despite the decline, buyers still forecast higher prices ahead. The index is projected to rise just over ten points to an average of 90 for the second quarter of this year.

In addition, the index is forecast to continue to rise for the remainder of the year--up to 102 points in the third quarter, and 105 in the fourth. It is projected to remain at 105 into the first part of next year.

Increases are also forecast for most indices of chemical groups. However, the index for inorganic chemicals is projected to fall nearly twenty points over the next twelve months. The price index for paper chemicals will also decline--down over four points by the start of 2000.
