Buyers still can't get good metal delivered on time
By Staff -- Purchasing, 1/13/2000
On-time delivery of metals remains a problem, buyers report in this month's survey, as agreed-upon delivery dates are being met just 81% of the time, the lowest level in two years. And the quality ranking of delivered goods has slipped to 95%, also the lowest in two years. Even though 80% of the respondents don't perceive supply as tight from either the mills or distributors, there is a growing list of items in short supply. These include: Annealed cold-rolled steel and high-grade aluminum sheet from distributors; large-angle, wide-flange beams, I-beams, high-alloy bars, and heavy-wall seamless carbon pipe and tube and stainless pipe from steel mills; specialty tubing and extruded parts from aluminum mills; high-grade copper rod and bronze castings from the coppermetals mills, and special-purpose stainless steel bars, high-grade and special purpose aluminum alloy, stainless steel and nickel-alloy sheets from both the mills and the service centers.PURCHASING's latest monthly business survey finds 41% of all buyers reporting higher prices for steel mill, aluminum products, and copper and brass goods. That compares with 48% who reported higher sales tags in the previous month's survey.
