Alcan adopts precautionary approach to climate change

By Staff -- Purchasing, 11/2/2000

Alcan Aluminium of Montreal, the world's second-largest aluminum company, will adopt, promote and regularly renew a long-term greenhouse gas management commitment at all facilities in 30 countries within the framework of its Target program. Being implemented during 2001, Target will allow all facilities to contribute to global greenhouse gas reductions based on what makes sense in their specific business context.

The program is intended to produce ongoing reductions and will become an integral part of Alcan's business metrics and best practices. "We believe that large companies such as Alcan have a role to play in society to preserve the environment by, among other things, reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that result from manufacturing products and delivering services," says CEO Jacques Bougie. "After all, whether our products are produced in Brazil and shipped to the U.K. or vice versa, the impact of the emissions is the same on a global level."
