TSMC gets bigger
By Staff -- Purchasing, 2/10/2000
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest IC foundry, will acquire Worldwide Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (WSMC).The consolidation has been approved by the board of directors of both TSMC and WSMC. The consolidation date is targeted for June 30, 2000, at which time WSMC will be absorbed into TSMC.
WSMC, established in May 1996, is a dedicated IC foundry company with fundamentally the same business scope as TSMC. Currently the third-largest foundry in Taiwan, WSMC operates one 8-inch fab using 0.25 micron and 0.18 micron process technologies. Production in the second 8-inch WSMC wafer fab is expected to commence in March 2000.
Total annual capacity for both fabs should reach 400,000 8-inch wafers this year and is expected to reach 760,000 8-inch wafers in 2001.
Worldwide demand for IC foundry capacity is increasing, as many chip companies are reluctant to invest in new capacity. TSMC says it will continue to consider new acquisitions as well as joint ventures and alliances to expand it capacity.
