Prices stay steady, but more report shortages
By Staff -- Purchasing, 2/10/2000
Over the past three years, few buyers have reported a shortage of parts. On average, only between 15%-20% of respondents to Purchasing Magazine's survey of electronics buying conditions each month would report that there are items in short supply. However, in January, 36% say there were components in short supply including capacitors, microprocessors and flash memory.Shortages are likely to get worse as demand is strong. Fifty-five percent of those surveyed report that their purchase orders will increase over the next 90 days, about the same as December. Only 5% expect their POs will decline in the next quarter.
While buyers report that there are parts in short supply, few see leadtimes stretching compared to the previous month. Fifty-eight percent in January reported that leadtimes were steady. Only 33% said delivery times were longer in January, compared to 37% in December.
Prices, for the most part, are holding steady, according to 70% of survey respondents. However, about 21% say prices were rising in January.
