Disk drives aren't just for computers anymore

Seagate Technology, the world's leading disk-drive supplier for the consumer market, says it is supplying its U8 disk drive to EchoStar Communications for use in its Dish Player 500 satellite receiver.

The new Dish Player 500 is the first satellite TV receiver with a built-in Seagate hard drive capable of simultaneously recording and playing back digital video without videotape. The drive makes possible a number of enhanced features for customers who subscribe to WebTV Personal TV service, such as up to 12 hours of digital video recording: TV Pause, skip, fast-forward or rewind any selected program; downloadable video games via satellite; and Instant News.
